Antifreeze
Poisoning Warning
We are warning vehicle owners to
take extra precautions to clear up spillages of anti-freeze
and not to leave it unattended after an increased number of
cats have been put down due to anti-freeze poisoning.
A veterinary practice not far
from us has had two cases of poisoning from ethylene glycol,
which is found in anti-freeze, in a week. “Anti-freeze is
sweet and tasty to cats and only a small amount is needed to
be ingested to be lethal”.
Signs of poisoning occur within
hours of ingestion “Cats appear wobbly on their legs, can
vomit, fit and quickly progress into kidney failure and
death”. Cat owners should know the symptoms to look out for,
and get their cats to the vets immediately if they suspect
poisoning.
With the recent colder weather,
there has been an increase in the number of poisonings. We
also ask that vehicle owners discard coolant properly and
clean up after any leaks.
